Yes. you heard it right. Even if you are playing a single player campaign or a 1vs1 skirmish against the computer. You need to first launch Steam and log in to Steam for the game to even launch. And this is not just for initial activation, but for subsequent plays. So when I tried to run the game without logging into Steam, nothing happens at all. The game doesn’t even launch. I log into Steam and the game loads.
It’s quite obvious what these guys are trying to do – they are trying to fight piracy. But they end up alienating the users. I have played RTS since the first Dune 2, and I have never had to go online to fight against the computer. In fact, I have never played a PC game that requires me to do this, unless it is an MMOG like World Of Warcraft.
I understand that piracy is really killing the PC business, but in an environment where console games are outselling PC games (revenues for console games are about 8x more than PC games worldwide) and beating the shit out of them, you don’t want to make you legitimate PC gamers angry.
And what about selling to the countries without much of a Net penetration? Or have they given up on these countries altogether?
Update: Some forumers are asking if this will work if Steam is running in offline mode. I will try that tonight. Another issue is whether you need to have a Windows Live account logged-in to play. Will also test that tonight. But having played this game for about 6 hours, I do like it a lot.
I just purchased the Dawn Of War @ Gold Edition. Got all excited to install and play but…then Steam got in the way…install their client and the stupid program tells me I am not connected to the internet! Their support is useless! Applied all portforwarding as required, even uninstalled programs that could inhibit the steam client from working and it still does not work! So I iffer a beautiful great big FUCK YOU to Steam. I have just wasted my money and have missed out on playing a game I was really looking forward to playing. I wonder if I can find a crack or someway of circumventing the Steam client nonesense! I paid good money for th egame and now I cant play it and they wont refund my money saying it is my problem! Again, I say, FUCK YOU steam!
I’m having a hard time just installing the game, all sort of crap spyware pops up and asks for passwords and shit I just want to play the fucking game why I need a password???
Now the cd is finally spinning, but I’m tempted to toss the game away… luckily I only paid 10€ for that but it’s still a defective product.
I dont really care about steam and all that.. But FUCK YOU GAMES FOR WINDOWS LIVE! TO WHOEVER MADE THAT SHIT I HOPE YOU DIE BY CHOKING ON GOATBALLS.
I had to wait like 12 hours for Steam to update itself, and got through an unforgivable amount of trouble, wasting too much time and become extremely stressful for a game. Dawn of war 2 is not a bad game but it’s simply does not deserve such effort. And the funniest thing is my douche bag friends downloaded it free on Internet in 2 hours and spent like 15 minutes to crack it, making me feel extremely stupid. When I returned the disk to the store, I said the problems of the game were the low level of intelligence of Relic for choosing Steam and the ultimate incompetency of those who created Steam and they actually accepted it ^,^. Swear to God I won’t touch anything that has Steam in it from now on and I will encourage as many people as I can to do the same thing. Fuck you Relic, fuck you Steam. return the money for those who can’t play it.
well all i say to you steam is you lost one more legit gamer to the pirates….so up yours….
@ WOLF
quote “2.)You can play offline its just the first time you start to play you have to activate it online then you can start your steam in offline mode and play to your hearts content”
Sorry Wolf but this is BS. IF you can get it to install properly, you STILL have to wait over 2 and 1/2 hours(on ADSL) for the fucking update from steam BEFORE you can even play the game!
buy game,
install game,
play game.
its not rocket science.
FUCK STEAM.
I bought the game, to play it in singel playern and on lan parties. I dont connect my gaming and working PC to the internet. Now i had to put up a connection, thousand erros showed up and I cant play the game. I hate relic for that and i wish the persons respeonsible a painful, slow an lonesom death. Ill never buy any game of this enterprise again.
Another person running their mouth without so much as LOOKING for “Offline mode” which is clearly visible.
People making posts like this which give PC Game makers a bad rep are the reason consoles are slowly winning.
Shut your damned mouth unless you know what you’re talking about.
Hi
I bought DOW2 today to play in single player until I can set up a broadband account next month, (I have already applied but it’ll take 30 days to sort everything out/get the modem)
In the meantime I am completely unable to play this game. What an absolute joke.
Relic, it’s this kind of treatment which is FORCING people to pirate your otherwise good software.
I’m using internet tethering for my phone to connect and post this message after trying to see if there’s another way around it. I get a 5mb per day limit for 3g, which steam will piss all over, so I can’t update steam, create an offline account and jump through all the other hoops you put in the way of me simply enjoying your product.
I have steam and usually love it, but without an adequate broadband connection until next month, I can’t play anything, hence my purchase of this game.
Nowhere on the box does it indicate that you HAVE to have a broadband connection to realistically have any chance of playing.
It’s a massive jump of logic to force people online to play the single player campaign/skirmishes. Couple that with the low technical ability of people like my father who hasn’t a hope in hell of manages to follow the obtuse processes, (windows live ffs…) and you’ve lost a potential customer.
I hope someone from relic reads this and takes it to the management. It is sorely tempting for me to get a friend to download the pirated version and play that instead. This is your fault.
Bottom line – Treating your customers like shit encourages piracy.
Morons
Dudes so what if it has steam and lots of updates just update it get steam activate the game then put steam on offline mode then u wont be using the internet any more. and it will still work with diel up it will just be slower.
… so i have a 56K connect, i DL at 2.2kb/s …. so guess what “estimated time to download [More Than 1 Year]” (the patch btw)
…………….why? and hows a guy not update and play, cause i spent 50$ on this BS…
Gentlemen and who ever is out there from steam. What it comes down to is that they are screwing out their fan base. I am in the Army. I bought the game while deployed to a base in Afghanistan. I played on line and loved it. I then got moved to a smaller base with no internet and can no longer play the game i spent good money on. The instructions listed above do not work for some reason.
I went online with steam before we moved. Switched it to offline mode, then when it restarted and could not connect to the profile or anything the game would not launch.
Does that seem fair to you guys at steam? So not only have you made it nearly impossible for loyal game fans to continue playing if something should happen to their internet. You are most definitely loosing the new fans as well.
If anyone has or can offer an actual fix to this please email me directly. Maybe i haven’t tried everything or haven’t followed the instructions well though they seem simple. I will have access to the common area PCs and can check my email there.
uarrastia@yahoo.com
hey Rohnur i bet u kiss society’s ass and suck its dick, hackers exsist bec. there is security not the other way around, and for every measure they take there will be an anti-measure, this is natures law. yin and yang. u want to waste ur money on overpriced games before fully testing it, be my guest. so stfu and and keep that terrorist ideology crap to ur fucking ass self. dont like it commit suicide, simple & easy.
~HAIL IRAN~
Yes it does run offline.
Thankyou sooooooooo much guys i’m a fan of DOW1 and was gonna play the demo of DOW2 then buy it but after downloading the demo i was told to install “steam” which i’ve never heard of so thought i’d google the company 1st before installing on my pc and after reading comments on here i’ve deleted the demo and will not be buying the game which is a shame cos i’m into warhammer40k.Thanks again guys for a very helpful forum 🙂
I am currently in Tikrit, Iraq and just got my new computer from newegg.com (toshiba qosimo q887, fast machine), BUT the Sniperhill internet connection that we have on base SUCKS. It took me about 6 hours to download the update and now I can not get into the game at all because windows live keeps getting stuck.
I have turned off my firewall, turned it on with permission granted to Steam and to windows live, tried every trick I can find on the internet (Thank god for my company connection, it is pretty fast, too bad I can not play games on the company laptop) and still nothing.
I am with the majority on this forum, I will never again purchase or play a game that requires steam or GFWL. Not worth the hassle, I can find better things to do with my time.
I hate the heck out of steam darn thing was so bugged on modernwarfare 2 that it damaged my system 32 on xp. i had to completely redo xp.
damages included. NO SOUND, Video card driver damage. no reconition of cpu. xp service pack unknown. and a blown lcd inverter. problem is they cannot be responsible for such damages because i agreed to their contract, i read every contract before i agree.
good thing i am a techy it took 2 days and 15 dollars to fix. i had a extra lcd inverter.
NOTE/ steam was the only thing turned on before modern warefare 2 and caused the noticeable damage!!! before modern warefare 2 came on.
i however installed a older steam to combat the problems of the newer steam. it worked and i have had no problems since. but dawn of war 2 seems to only be playable on multplayer and coop online. they could of lest left lan playing offline…..
Those chimps high up in their office need to get off their backsides and fix their shoddy products. I had no idea what steam was when I got the game but now they have become the bane of my life!
Ok, so i can understand the anti-piracy thing, and in my opinion if you buy a pirate game you get exactly what you paid for, a lot of dodgy shit.
My quarm is that I am in the middle of Afghanistan, with extremely limited access to the internet, let alone limited downloads, and i have spent the past 2 days trying to download a patch so that i can play a game that i purchased on my computer without it demanding to go online.
Yes online play is great, when you have access, but why do i need to be online, or why do i NEED to download a patch so that i can actually play the game!
Anti-piracy gone way too far chaps, I will be avoiding all ‘Steam’ and ‘MS Live’ games from now on, and would strongly advise any others to do the same. As for the forces, if you insist on buying a ‘Steam’ game, ensure you can get access to a plug in net connection as it won’t download over the ‘paradigm’ service. Do as many favors as you can, as I have done.
JD
One question…
1) Why DOW2 can’t be like its glorified predecessors like Soulstorm or Dark Crusade?
I’m rather pissed with this bane of gamers called STEAM.
The STEAM is making many nomadic guys like me that drooled and played the game with a laptop while venturing into “ancient” rural areas, looked like two-weeks old pile of nano-turds. Those leech-infested places is where the Net isn’t much of a upgrade to us. After all, I’m a die hard W40k fan and I can’t live peacefully without playing the W40K games.
damm game scrwed me around for 7 hours
I have a few things to rant about on this subject and unfortunately its not on the steam problem. Its about all the guys ranting on the THQ and Relic companies.
1.)If your a hardcore gamer then you should suck it up get over to your friends or get a wireless connection from across the street with low connectivity like I did cause I think I should play the game once before I get mad at the companies or the game. Its well worth the 3 hour update process I went through
2.)You can play offline its just the first time you start to play you have to activate it online then you can start your steam in offline mode and play to your hearts content.
3.)Once you start playing this game you will forget all about the updating and installing process cause this game is so f**king fun I congratulate THQ and Relic for all their hardwork on this game. I wish I could install it on my dads comp because its better but its internet settings a screwed up right now and im in the process of figuring out what happened.
4.)The reason they do this is to stop piracy I can’t blame them for trying but like a dude said up there “People who pirate are always one step ahead of the anti-piracy companies.” Of course I kinda Para-phrased.
5.)You guys should suck it up all the time your thinking up what your gonna say in your rant you could have been installing the game and playing by the time you got done writing this. I haven’t found any big reason to stop buying THQ and Relic games.
6.)I do however agree that you shouldn’t have to have your game connected to the internet at anytime as in after installing the game even if its just once. Mainly because not everyone has a internet connection just like my dads computer can’t.
7.)The only thing I don’t like about this game is the graphics requirements D: mainly cause i have to play it on low settings to get it to play without being choppy and to get it to play normally. ;D
Thank you for letting me get a little rant out there.
Man i just finished soulstorm today. i loved the series and wanted to cash in for DOW2 until i read this page. I dont have internet connection in my house becuz i just moved in and it will prolly take lik 1mth to get one(i m in internet cafe now). There is this so called steam thing that makes u get steamed up and everyday my fren who plays DOW2 complained at least once on how steam is a fag
I have to say i used to be able to play this game just fine i never played online because i prefer offline gaming. Recently something magical happened and now dawn of war or steam or something can’t connect to the internet which is decent and I can no longer play and apparently offline mode isn’t available for this game. fuck this i’ve never been so irritated just make people register their game to go online and save us people who are happy with single player the trouble of online servers and whatnot
The damn thing WILL NOT EVEN START for me so far. Good luck all you people who made DOW 2. Im not buying another one of those games!
LOAD ING THE FUCKIN GAME TO CAMPAIGN MODE TOOK 20 MINS
FUCK DOW2 IT FUCKING SCREWED ME AROUND FOR 7 FUKCKIN HOURS STEAM I FUNCKING HATE U I AM DONE WITH THIS SHIT AND EVEN AFTER IT FINALY INSTALED THE GAME IS THE SLOWEST GAME TO FUCKING LOAD I HAVE EVER SEEN
DOWN WITH STEAM
I bought the gold edition yesterday.
I cannot even get it to run on my high tech game pc. I uninstalled it, reinstalled it, uninstalled steam, reinstalled steam, uninstalled windows live, reinstalled windows live etc. etc.
It just won’t boot. Every time I click the icon and nothing happens Steam tell me afterwards that I have been playing the game, which is bullshit.
So now I have downloaded a pirated copy and have no problems at all.
The pirated copy is a breeze to use.
I have learned an important lesson. I should download more pirated games for free instead of buying legitimate copies. Thank you.
I won’t be buying legitimate steam dependent games again anytime soon, but you can be assured I will be playing them and it will cost me nothing.
Thank you steam, thank you thq, thank you relic.
Though this is an old post, it should be noted that you do not need to be online to play Dawn of War II via Steam. Steam has an offline mode in the even you do not want or cannot connect to the Internet. Link: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=3160-AGCB-2555. As far as having to launch a secondary application to play and register your key I see absolutely no reason why people are protesting this simple security measure.
The idea of any good security measure is to implement something that is effective, but causes the least inconvenience to those that abide by the laws. It takes an extra five to ten seconds to launch Steam first, and the online key activation is a way to stop thieves, not treat customers as thieves. When you walk out of a retail store through the security scanner at the door do you throw a fit over being treated like a thief? Doubtful. If the security measure was more intrusive akin to a strip search, then there would obviously be a worthy argument here.
The inconvenience of Steam being required to play a game is arguably outweighed by its benefits: cheaper games (four Civ IV or three FEAR games for $10), in-game instant messaging, achievement tracking, automatic updates and news, and a very cohesive interface for all your games. The only valid argument against Steam is that you cannot sell your used games if you don’t want to play them anymore. That is by far the biggest negative aspect of Steam. If you go through games at fast intervals, don’t buy them from Steam. If you keep games for years, then their value is minimal by the time you want to sell them anyway. If you shop intelligently on Steam, the amount of money you would have made by selling an old used game is probably close to the savings you got when purchasing it in the first place.
and @ Ceser Phantom RR
The sytem requirements are there so you dont waste your money on a game you cant play? or did you not read the back . . .
I for one congratulate Steam. Sure, so you have to wait a little longer to play your game, but, it clearly says in big as red writing “Internet Required” on the box. Piracy funds terrorism. Our troops are fighting terrorists and bleeding to protect us. And you all complain about waiting a few hours/days just to play a game. Piracy is also a fairly large factor in destroying economies, do your damn part. GJ Steam.
I know how you feel, im probly the only person in my high school that has the internet but cant play Call Of Duty: MW2, I recenly got intersted in the game, but beacuse i dont have the goddam system reqiurments i cant even play the *******, i cant even get my money back, personlly I want to kill the ****** who said “you should need system requirments”, WHY, I ASK, WHY?, consles (E.G PSP, PS3, PS2, Ect.) Dont even need system requirments, it sould only be for the net that you need the requirments, not the whole game, waste of money for me, i wouldnt cae if i could get my money back, but i cant, i wont kill anyone im just expressing how im feeling
Look this is bullshit Steam support does not have any contact number I emailed them with a problem took 1 and a half weeks for them to fix it. (lost Password) Then it says my cd key is a duplicate waiting again for prob another week watch there gonna ask for proof of purchase the game was bought like a year ago I don’t have it. This is crap instead or spending money on shit like steam spend it on punishing people for pirating not the legitimate buyers you dumb f’s. I have owned 8 f’n wireless routers none of them provide 24/7 stable connection so what the f am I to do when I cant connect. Also I go through phases I play one game for months then stop for several months only to come back to it. I shouldn’t have to jump through hoops to play a game I bought for 50$ now your gonna have to jump through hoops to get me to buy another steam game so far supreme commander 2, left for dead 2, and dow 2 exp, you have sold atleast one less copy. Prob hundreds
hi all , just a small query , i have done everything the game has asked of me , downloaded all the “steam” nonsence , created a windows live log-in , connected to the internet and downloaded the patch etc . but when i go into steam it says dawn of war 2 is “100% ready to play” , i click launch ….. i hear the hard drive making noise like its trying to access something , but nothing happens . literally nothing . no error messages , and no game 🙁
any one else ever got this or is it just me ?
In this industry you can’t make anything right as it seems. If the game is patched it’s wrong – if it isn’t patched it’s wrong too.
As said by the Relic rep, you can get into offline mode with Steam where the internet connection is not required. Next, you can right click on your game go to “Properties” -> “Updates” and select, “Do not automatically update this game” and be done with updates if you want to play unpatched games.
Now I don’t know if you need to update before the first launch right after install, but I would assume you can avoid the patching.
Now if you think that is a hassle, then by all means get a console and stay away from a PC, as this is not a toy with 5 buttons – it requires some basic understanding and once you have that you can fix a lot of problems mentioned above within few seconds.
Next, I’m wondering what game boxes you have, on my it clearly says “requires online activation” albeit in my own language. That said, the game does not require you to have an internet connection only for the first activation, for everything else there is Steams offline mode.
Windows Live is a pain occasionally, but if I buy a Need For Speed game, I have to go through EA’s bullshit registrations on Gamespy and patcher. All major games have more or less some kind of registration process, and if this 10 seconds is too much to ask from users then the world is better of dead.
And frankly it’s 2010, everything will slowly but surely require an internet connection, not only games. If you can’t afford a reliable connection, you can’t afford computer games, if you can’t find a good provider in your vicinity well you’re out of luck.
I too live in a house where there is no room for a pool, but I won’t cry to pool fabricators why their pools require so much space that I can’t have one on this location.
To all those shlepps advocating internet connections -go take a flying FUG!!
I’m in India and for the past 3 days been trying to play this stupid game —but for the download shite thats happening evryday!!!(ive got my DSL d/l ing at 112Kbps for 3 nights in a row..but hey -o no cigar!
All balls!
@Zmobchomper
You know what’s a *better* distribution service? Going to a fucking store and buying the damn thing.
The fucking box I *just* bought does not say I need internet access in order to play this damn game. However, here I am, trying to play the Campaign mode and I get swamped with retarded Windows LIVE setup processes.
You guys are all a bunch of fucking whiners. Dial-up internet isn’t even that much cheaper than DSL, nowadays. You can get a quality DSL line for around $10 a month. Unless you’re paying for your dial-up in cents, you’re probably going to get better product for your money if you make the switch to a *MODERN* internet connection.
Steam is an excellent content distribution service. Their servers are almost never down, and when they are, it’s only for a few minutes. Their servers are fast(2mb/s downloads!) and the client is reliable. It’s not a resource hog or intrusive in any way. iTunes will rape your computer more than Steam will.
As a few other people have stated, if you have the money to buy these games, and if you have the money to buy a computer that can handle it, you have the money to pay for decent, not even blazing fast, internet.
Get off your high horse and realize that with dial-up and a mindset stuck in the 1990s means you’re the lowest common denominator and no one’s pandering specifically to you. Get with the times.
Yeah, I totally agree. I just bought DoW2 Chaos Rising and something is wrong with the Windows Live server. This has NOTHING to do with my internet connection. Windows Live has an error at the moment and I have to wait for them to get off their @$$ to play. The more I think about it, the more pissed off I get. To require internet connection to play campaign or skirmish (which is really all I do) is ridiculous but I put up with it. But even then, if there’s an error or something is wrong with the servers during your initial installation then you are shit out of luck. I wish I had known that gameplay depends on a company to keep its servers up and running…Now, I cant log in to authenticate it but since its installed, I cant even play the original Dow2…I just paid 40 bucks to be screwed out of playing not one but two games. Relic/THQ, you just lost a loyal customer and I will definitely spread my experience to the rest of my friends. I for one am not putting up with this BS anymore.
Maybe there is some consumer law that would allow us to file a class action lawsuit and get our money back for this crappy product that we can’t enjoy unless there is an Internet connection.
I am not buying anymore PC games until they stop this abusive stupid policies against legitimate consumers. If I buy a games I want to able to play it regardless weather there is Internet connection or not. I am returning this game back to the store for not specifying that an internet connection is required.
Haha what. It says right on the box Internet connection required. Steam is a client that pretty much only works while online, with the ability to go into offline mode.
So for those who didn’t read that it requires an internet connection and thought “oh hey my dial up should work” or “why does it need an internet connection” needs to reconnect a few dots.
Rich enough to buy a game, rich enough to buy an internet. A decent non-dial up non-cable connection isn’t even that expensive.
Also steam isn’t hard to work. You download the client, install. You download/install the game, run. Patch. Done. Its not a fault of the game but the gamer.
I just can’t get the whole steam/dow 2/live thing to work. I actually wanted a nice stand alone game to wean me off WOW. The reason I buy games is as one poster says because I am working I am relatively cash rich and time poor. This is now causing me to be time poor, trying to sort this mess (still with no joy and rubbish support) I am now going to invest time getting cracked versions, cracked updates and be sure not to give any of my wages to the whole steam bandwagon ever again. once bitten, twice shy. (bet they didn’t include that in their sales pitch to all the devs)
If the keep putting Steam on the Dawn of War series, they might as well stop producing them all together.
I think that this is a great idea. Whoever has a computer capable of playing Dawn of war II obviously has an Internet connection. And can quite easily connect to steam in order to run the game. The only people that should be bothered by this are the people that are trying to steal it.
Games for Windows live was a failed attempt at stopping piracy. I have a very simple way of playing all games for windows live Games online for free. Except for this one because it requires steam.
I can understand someone that always buys their games being a little annoyed that they have to be “treated like a criminal”. But to be perfectly honest. Almost every PC gamer downloads at least some of their video games if they’re not too sure they actually want to buy it.
Who doesn’t like a full version demo:)
Well found that out on the first day , the game isnt bad , the graphic is great and all of that but oldies are goldies im playing Dawn of War with all addons ^^.
diablo u **** !!! no one is as fecking “rich” as you!!! feelng rich? suck my ass
are u srs? its 2010 and ur still on dialup..
steams fine with a half decent internet connection so stop complaining and realise that perhaps its your problem.
This is horrible ! I want play DoW2 at my cottage (without internet connection) and I CAN’T !!! Because of “Steam” and “Windows Live” …. I Hate them and now I hate the game …. It’s annoying to connect the internet cable and login every time I want play !!!
Hate this, I feel like a tool.
Just bought Dawn of War 2, saw the nice shiny box with decent requirements only to bring it home to discover it uses steam. Its one of those games you never knew existed, now I wish I could get a refund on this piece of garbage but the sad truth is you can’t.
To make matters worse there is no offline mode its constantly connected to the net, the packaging was deceiving no where stating steam comes with it.
Anyone considering buying this that hates steam as I do, stay away from this product.
Well today was the last day I wrote exams and the summer vacation beginning and all, I went and bought me a copy of DOW2 and and and and yeah I TOTALLY BLEW IT, the game wasn’t working and found that it was not just me who suffered. I was so mad I pounded my keyboard to shit and had to use my brother’s. And steams loser stupid weak ass support was making me so MAD I screamt all day like a chimp with hemariods. I got a cracked one from a buddy just a few minutes ago and im telling you NEVER will I buy a game agian down of war 2 brought up grief and dispaer. and all Thanks To Steam you worthless sons of bitches
All you guys said it…
1) taking forever to download and install. wat? what did i buy the dvd for then???
2) couldn’t even return it to retailer.
3) log in and face pop up ads on steam (too much of this crap from explorer)
some one said, “You can put Steam in offline mode, and use an offline profile with GFWL.”
so, i have to buy the disk to get online to set up a profile with Steam to download & install the game then setup a profile with Windows Live and to play the game keep a steam client running…
4) waaaaaaay tooooooooooo much trouble to play a game! A GAME PPL, A GAME!
…waste of 40 bucks…
SCREW STEAM! WILL NEVER, EVER BUY STEAM/WINDOWS LIVE GAMES!
First I downloaded the game from TPB and after getting about half way through, it being such a good game and all, I felt bad and I want and bought a copy, this steam™ crap SUCKS! I wish I had never bought the game, the don’t deserve the money.
Its an awesome game, but nothing, NOTHING, is worth ThaT much trouble!!!
I wish i would have read this before making my first pc-game purchase. I bough this game to play on my laptop on an 8hr trip only to be stuck with nothing because there is no internet on the freeway. This was supposed to show me how great Pc games are, is what i was told. BS I am not ever going to buy another pc game there’s to much crap to play the damn campaign mode. This blows I asked for my money back from THQ.
i got a man to come and do it.pc world are really good at doing stuff to the computer see ya bye.
don’t be mad about steam its not that bad (:. it just a game.
i now how to get dawn of war working . when you got your computer upgraded the internet connection will not be conected.so get some one to come from pc word to do it.
I really hate STEAM> next time I will not buy any game that requires STEAM.
Steam is absolutely retarded. There is no other way to put it. I have the SLOWEST dial-up I have ever seen (500 bytes/sec) and I don’t want to have to download a damn patch just to play the game. Sure, I can go over to my friend’s house and get it, but that takes time and gas money I don’t have (spent it all on the f-ing game). I had no idea that you even needed internet to install it, so call me a moron and shoot me.
I have no respect for steam whatsoever because they’re really trying to kill legitimate gamers and they especially screwed Dawn of War.
some ppl want to go on without fucking logging in to two things when u go online it causes lag (not 4 me but for my friends witch causes me to lag) why cant we play on the disc like regular games dawn of war 1 had a simple (installation) dawn of war fans will be pissed off cause of the fucking 6 steps.
1.install 3496 mb
2.kis steams as by updating sht that will keeping on restarting after 100%
3.u will not problly make pas step 2 but if u do u hav to be online
4.kis windoes lives as
5.create accounts 4 sht
6.(u sold tha game back already)
ps. dont waste your $50 bucks
ps pt 2 tell yo firends who will buy dawn of war 2 we must boycott the game so our problem can be resovled
fck u steam this is a problem with all steam games
took me 1 week 8 hours a day to finnaly get to fckin play the game
steam yo engine sucks ass 4 real change yo gay update ways!
As I type this I’m sat staring waiting for DoW2 to get going, it’s been almost an hour now of messing about. Last time I tried Steam was with the Half Life 2 release day fiasco but back then I was on 56k modem. Now I’m on a fast internet connection and I’m still sat about waiting.
I don’t have anything against Relic or the game, I have issue with Steam. I’ve never downloaded a game before, but next time a game I’m really interested in comes out on Steam, I WILL be visiting isohunt.com. Cheers.
What happened?!! Dow has had the luxury of being one of the least pirated games on the planet, and now people have to pirate the game just to play without steam!!!
So far almost everyone I know except for my brother sent back there copy and instead pirated the cracked version.
ITS FUCKIN ANNOYING I JUST WANNA PLAY THE GAME AND I HAVE TO UPDATE!!!!
AND I HAVE FUCKING DIAL UP.!!!!
THESE FUCKERS!!! IM NEVER BUYING A GAME THAT HAS “Steamworks” ON THE BACK AGAIN!!!!
TAKE THAT THQ!!!
It annoys me to no end that when I buy a game like DoW II or Half Life 2 or any other game with steam attached, I’m essentially buying an empty box. I 26k have dial-up… that makes patching an application such as Steam nearly impossible and when I do manage to get it updated I have to carefully guard it from ever seeing the internet again… else it decide it needs to download 3 years of updates.
While I agree that Steam has many cool features for those of us that DO have high speed internet, we cannot forget the large percentage of people in the US and abroad that don’t. Steam should be optional.
Yogurt Prime makes an excellent point. Pirates tend to be people who can’t afford the game.
My brother bought a legitimate copy and has a Loader in his DOW2 to bypass the steam crap.
One other point:
You guys complain about piracy but the truth is that heavily pirated games are also heavily purchased games. See Doom and Quake for a prime example. I never met anyone in my teen years who had a purchased copy of Doom or Quake, yet all the guys who wrote it are wealthy beyond all dreams of avarice. Every person who paid for a copy would go online and find a vibrant community, a significant portion of which never paid for the game. It’s a classic network effect, sort of like how Microsoft benefits from people pirating Word and becoming fluent in their products instead of competing word processors like wordperfect or open office.
The vast majority of people who pirate wouldn’t buy anyway. Simply put, 15 year olds don’t have huge amounts of disposable income to spend on games but they have lots of free time to crack them. You’ve been trying to fight this for decades and it hasn’t worked. I remember playing Xwing as a kid with a photocopied version of the copy protection booklet. Software publishing has gotten more sophisticated, but the pirates have always been a step or two ahead of every advancement.
For every kid that spends 8 hours a day participating in the warez scene to score 0-day games, there are at least a few adults who have jobs and would rather just spend 5 minutes and 30 bucks to buy the game off a shelf. Usually after asking their warez-savvy teenage kid “what game is good?”
You’re not losing sales, you’re generating good word of mouth.
I learned this the hard way with DOW1. Horribly broken multiplayer and the patches made it worse without fixing the original bugs.
In the end I said to hell with it and swore to stop sending them money. Sure enough, I warezed the sequels to DOW and all reports are that the multiplayer continued to suck and be imbalanced. I got to experience the game (and then delete it) without experiencing the hassle that comes with buying it.
Unless you are going to be playing a game online that is actually known to not suck (like TF2), there is zero reason to pay money. All they do is punish you with onerous DRM and shitty, machine-breaking patches. To hell with that.
I JUST BOUGHT DOW2 …AND WTF I HAVE A HORRIBLE INTERNET CONNECTION AND HALF OF THE TIME I DONT HAVE INTERNET… I BOUGHT THIS GAME BECAUSE I REALLY WANTED TO PLAY IT WITHOUT THE HASSLE OF CRACKING IT…MY FRIEND ENDED UP DOWNLOADING THE CRACK VERSION….AND IT TOOK LESS TIME THAN DOWNLOADING 20% from the STEAM CLIENT UPDATES… HONESTLY ALL I WANTED TO DO WAS PLAY SINGLE PLAYER WHILE IM IN AIRPORTS OR AWAY WITH MY LAPTOP..I DONT EVEN LIKE MULTI PLAYER….WTF RELIC IM NEVER BUYING ANYTHING FROM YOU GUYS AGAIN….EVER!!!!! what ever happend to buying a game. installing only the game and playing it without any fuckin UPDATES
Actually the pirated version of this game is so much easier to run. Just copy the whole damn folder and copy the crack file and play. I just got the original copy today and am regretting it. It took over 2 hours just to get the game running from all the download bullcrap. Then this site tells me I can’t run it without internet? I didn’t buy an online game! What happens if my internet crashes so which means I can’t play what I paid for? This game just tortures people for doing the right thing and paying for it. I shoul’ve stuck with my pirated copy at least I’m playing it right now rather than waiting for all these Steam crap……
What about LAN games?
Ive played sooo many hrs of DOW1 and i was really sad when i faced all the stupid Steam/GFW-problems, just to install the game ..
To bad Relic, im not buying any more games if this is the way its gone be …
who gives a shit about achievements and gamerscore? what this comes down to is i just spent £30 on a game that i installed and steam wouldnt let me play without patching. i could have just downloaded the pirate one in less time than this patch is taking and i wouldnt have to worry about the steam bs. i HATE steam. i dont even want it on my pc. and now by association i HATE all compaines associated with DoW2. no more money for you EVER!
You can put Steam in offline mode, and use an offline profile with GFWL.
The only time you NEED to connect to Steam is the first time, to activate the game and download the initial patch. After that you never need to connect again, if you just want to play alone. Keep in mind that you still need the Steam client running, it just doesn’t have to be connected.
We do warn you in-game that Achievements and Gamerscores are not tracked in GFWL offline mode.
@Billy
It’s a gamer thing. We can be incredibly hardcore about things we’re passionate about. ^^
Hello Mr Chan,
not like you to get so steamed up.
Or to rant unstoppably on a roll, like …well…a steamroller.
But better to blow a valve and let out some steam instead of keeping it all cooped up inside.
The key issue is that software companies that don’t try to combat piracy will soon be Left4Dead.
However, I agree that having a steam fortress strategy is not the way to go.
Oh man. This is a TOTAL pet peeve of mine.
I have refused to buy any of Valve’s product (because those morons conceived and run the Steam authentication) ever since one glaring incident a long time ago over Half-Life 2.
Problem 1: the original Half-Life 2 required internet connection to connect to play. When it was first launched, it was so congested you had to wait hours to log in to play the single player story mode. You had a shiny new game you couldn’t play, whilst all the pirates were *already* up and running playing the game with a cracked version.
Problem 2: I passed the original set to my friend to play because it didn’t play well on my PC as I hadn’t upgraded it yet. And guess what? The stupid Steam authentication did it in again because the transfer of password and comp settings didn’t match. Calling tech support in US would have been far too much of a hassle.
And all the while, happily cracked pirated versions of the game worked. When you SCREW over loyal customers on some DRM infested rubbish or authentication that makes it more difficult to enjoy something I BOUGHT, you lose me as a customer. Forever, and I will tell all my friends about it. I have another true story to relate how I had to CRACK my own ORIGINAL SirTech (now dead) Wizardry 8 game to play it, but that is another long story.
Death to stupid game distribution companies who make boneheaded decisions. When will they learn that these stupid measures alienate the fans? You really think we couldn’t get your stupid game any other way or there are no better alternatives (all the indie games) out there?
What install my original Spore 5 times only on my PC? Screw you EA! Never buying something from you again till you correct this idiotic policy. Bundle your malware Starforce DRM with your game? Screw you! After I patch to remove your buggy DRM, I’m never buying a game from you again until you correct the error. (which to Ubisoft’s credit, they did)
GRRRR!
Its a new working “requirements” on the side of the box says minimum CPU speed, RAM, HDD space, etc etc. I guess “Internet connection” just got added to the list.
type dawn of war 2 into google news under sci/tech, techgoondu is ranked no 1!!!!! right now
It’s a pain in the arse, all these so-called measures to fight piracy. Some argue they fight “zero-day” piracy, and are thus necessary for a game’s sales. I think it’s nonsense to treat your customers like thieves.
I can deal with all this activation/deactivation, but if the game is no longer fun as a result of such cumbersome steps, then don’t you think real gamers are getting a raw deal for buying the original instead of the ‘unlimited usage’ pirated copy?
