A week after a high-profile glitch prevented many of its mobile users from making calls or sending SMSes, M1 has apologised and offered to give a day’s worth of free calls and SMSes to all its users.
This will commence from 00:00 hours to 23:59 hours of 25 May 2011, the Singapore telecom operator said today, in a statement to the media.
On the morning of May 18, several M1 users found that they were unable to connect to the network. Some could not make calls or send SMSes for up to 10 hours, according to a report on AsiaOne.
M1 explained today that the disruption was caused by a “faulty card” in one of its servers, which prevented users from logging onto its network. It insisted that only a “small percentage” of users were affected.
Here’s an except of the statement:
Due to an unexpected technical failure on a card in one of our many customer management servers, a small percentage of our customers were not able to connect to our network on 18 May 2011. In view of this incident, M1 today advises that all our customers will enjoy one day of free local mobile calls, SMS and MMS, on 25 May, Wednesday.
Social media was very buzzy during the M1 outage period. In fact all three telcos showed a spike in mentions.
