Apple’s latest update to the iOS, the software that powers all iDevices including the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, comes with one or two nice touches, as well as some minor tweaks as well.
For starters, iTunes Match is much more flexible. Now, you can download individual songs from the Net, instead of the entire album, as was before.
The service syncs your ripped CDs and digital tracks online and lets you access them on your Apple or Windows device. Previously, you’d have to download an entire album, even if you only wanted one single track from it.
In iOS 6, you also get to better control how you are identified by advertisers – by resetting things with a new button.
The Advertising Identifier was first introduced in iOS 6.0 to allow users to choose how much they want advertisers to track their online activities.
With the new reset button, users can better protect their privacy by periodically ‘resetting’ this identifier. This means you’d appear as ‘a new user.’ You can access this setting by going to Settings -> General -> About -> Advertising.
Other features on iOS 6.1, however, seem to be geared towards users outside of Singapore. Siri can now help you buy cinema tickets, but that’s only available in the United States.
iOS 6.1 also supports LTE in 36 new iPhone carriers and 23 iPad carriers around the world.
I downloaded the update to my iPhone 5, and since the LTE networks were already working well with the iPhone 5 in Singapore, there wasn’t much difference.
Perhaps it would help with iPhones on Starhub’s network, which is not yet fully on LTE throughout Singapore.
