A new computing facility has been set up by Microsoft Singapore and Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) to train students on technologies that help to glean insights from huge volumes of data.
Called the Ambient Intelligence Computing Centre (AICC), the facility will expose NYP students and staff to the nuts and bolts of big data, predictive analytics, cloud computing, as well as machine learning.
The goal is to equip NYP’s final-year IT students with knowledge and skills to develop innovative solutions in support of Singapore’s smart nation vision, Microsoft and NYP said in a statement today.
The students, who will receive guidance from NYP and industry experts, will be among the first in Asia to be skilled in Microsoft’s Azure Machine Learning cloud service that lets developers embed predictive analytics into business applications.
They will also get to work with real world data and build predictive models, which can be deployed on the ground.
One of the final-year projects being piloted at the AICC is a security control system that recognises car number plates and faces using an intelligent smart glass camera.
With the system, security personnel can better monitor public safety and verify if a vehicle or a person poses a security threat.
