Folks who have found smartwatches too squarish can look to Samsung’s new Gear 2 and Gear 2 classic, the latest to mimick traditional watches with their round faces.
Out in Singapore on October 2, the two wearable gadgets feature the Korean electronics giant’s own Tizen operating system.
Despite not using the more common Android Wear, they are expected to hook up to a variety of Android smartphones. That’s as long as you have one that supports Android 4.4 or later and has at least 1.5GB of RAM.
With a 1.2-inch circular Super AMOLED screen, the new Samsung smartwatches should let you show off some pretty watch faces. The 360 x 360 resolution helps as well.
Both are water- and dust-resistant, with a rating of IP68 to keep out the elements. However, the Gear S2 is the one aimed at those on the go, coming with a dark grey case and band or silver case with white band.
Meanwhile, the S2 classic is targeted at folks who are after a more timeless look. It features a black case with a leather band.
Inside, the hardware is similar. You get sensors to measure your heart rate as well as distance walked or jogged. At the same time, the watches play back your music, like with Android Wear watches.
Both watches are light too. The Gear S2 weighs 47g and the Gear S2 classic weighs just 42g. This is with a 250mAh battery that can be charged wirelessly and is touted to last up three days before needing a recharge.
The Gear S2 is going for S$448. The Gear S2 classic will cost S$548.
