Samsung today showed off Quantum dot as a key feature in its new 2016 TV lineup in Singapore, sticking to curved screens as a big selling point as before.
While rival LG recently unveiled its souped up OLED TV lineup with many flat options, the top models for Samsung continue to push curved screens as premium options (see our take on curved screens).
The KS9000 series, which comes in 55-, 65- and 78-inch models, promise an immersive experience with a seemingly edge-less design. Last year’s curved models – the JS series – often had thicker bezels.
The biggest selling point, however, is Quantum dot, which Samsung believes will bring the best picture quality. It is said to “unlock” a billion colour combinations, resulting in vibrant and true-to-life images.
The KS9000 also features the latest hot technology – HDR or high dynamic range – which shows off the brightest parts of an image clearly while keeping details in the shadows viewable instead of being washed out.
Samsung also says its TVs offer Ultra Black, a feature that makes the blacks in its TVs seem deeper and more realistic. However, how well that measures up to the widely acknowledged standard in the market – OLED TVs made by LG – remains to be seen.
As before, the TVs will use Samsung’s own Tizen operating system, which has been deployed in last year’s TVs as well. The Korean electronics giant, however, have souped up the interface for users to look up content and apps faster.
The KS9000 is out in Singapore now. The 55-inch version goes for S$5,199 and the 65-incher costs S$7,199. The 78-inch option is out by June, but prices are yet to be revealed.
