Imagine telling your phone to “write a poem inspired by a starry night,” or “design a logo that combines a dragon and a robot”.
With Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8s Gen 3’s on-device GenAI, that kind of creative power could be in your pocket. It will be available not in flagship Android phones but in mid-tier models, without the hefty price tag.
The Snapdragon 8s Gen3 unveiled on March 18 is designed to elevate user experiences, with the GenAI features and an advanced image signal processor (ISP), both of which promise to unlock a new level of creativity and content creation for users.
With smartphone prices on the rise, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 offers a lower-cost alternative chipset for smartphone makers who still want to deliver a premium handset with on-device AI capabilities among other features.
“The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 is designed to elevate user experiences,” said Chris Patrick, senior vice president and general manager of mobile handsets at Qualcomm Technologies.
The on-device GenAI will be able to create things from spoken, written or visual prompts with the help of an AI-powered assistant. The new chipset can also run large language models of up to 10 billion parameters including Llama 2.
It can also offer a photo expansion feature that can generate backgrounds and other content outside of the captured photo’s frame.
Other features which will be available with the new chipset include an “always-on” ISP that constantly captures content to create improved photos and videos.
In mobile gaming, Qualcomm says its new chipset will allow for “console-like experiences” on the go with more realistic graphics. Users, it says, can also expect lossless high-definition sound on the go.
Already, device makes such as Honor, iQOO, Realme, Redmi and Xiaomi are adopting the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 for future products. The first phones featuring the new chipset are expected this month.
